Interlude: Kris Kristofferson

When people talk about sacrificing for their art, they usually mean going through life with a limited income, not being able to afford a few basic luxuries, or having to hold down a day job in order to support their music, poetry, or painting—whatever art form they practice.

With Kris Kristofferson, the sacrifice went far beyond that. He literally sacrificed his family; when he left the military to pursue a music career, his parents disowned him and they never reconciled. Shortly after that, his wife, who had married an army captain and found herself living in a strange city with a man who supported them with odd jobs while he stayed out all night writing songs, took the kids and left.
